Red Bank Mourns Police Chief Steve McCarthy

This morning the heavenly light brought home the brightest light on Red Bank’s horizon. Our beloved Chief of Police, Stephen G. McCarthy, entered eternal rest earlier this morning after a courageous battle with cancer.

At this moment, the source of his greatness, our Heavenly Father, will be hugging him now saying “Welcome home good and faithful son, well done.”

The Police Commissioner, Councilman Murphy and I join so many thousands in extending our profound sympathy to Mary Ellen, his loving wife and partner in all of his accomplishments, and to Matthew and Jenna, the source of such love and pride. 

God was truly pleased when he created this loving, incredible family. Our condolences are extended to Steve’s mom and dad who nurtured him so well in the loving husband and dedicated father that he was.

I have lost a good friend and invaluable partner; the Police Department has been deprived of the spirited leadership and unstinted dedication of the most consummate law enforcement professional in the State. 

His fellow Borough employees have lost a colleague who was a true friend. The residents of Red Bank have been deprived of an intelligent, gracious, gentle and efficient public servant.

The Red Bank Police Department was Chief McCarthy’s total joy and he was the source of their professionalism. The men and women of the force are now orphans. 

From his employment as a patrolman in 1986, to his promotion as Detective in 1992, as Sergeant in 1996, Lieutenant in 2003, Captain in 2007 and Chief on January 11, 2010, Steve brought a joyful spirit and dedicated compassion that, by his example, was extended to every member of the force.

We in Red Bank are grateful for having been blessed with a man of the caliber of Chief McCarthy. His legacy is etched in the actions of so many he trained to be examples of good public servants.

His everlasting memorial is the love not only of his colleagues and other officers, but the grateful affection of a municipality and the residents proud of him and of his life. 

The greatest gift that he leaves is the knowledge that he made all of us better individuals by his life.  May he rest in the company of the angels.
