How the Employed Can Help the Unemployed

This post asks the employed to help the unemployed with some networking help.

As you know our nation's employment numbers are in the dumps. Today’s job report again shows no improvement and this not only adds to the discouragement of the long termed unemployed but it is also causing the stock market to tumble. For the 40th consecutive month the unemployment number has been at 8+%. This is the longest streak since 1948.

Of course American business needs to step up to the plate but is there anything that you as an individual can do? Yes, there is. If you hear of an opening in your company or place of business, please pass it along to one of your unemployed friends. If you’re comfortable with it, let them know that they can use your name too. It’s as simple as that.

More than 85% of jobs are found through networking and as every job seeker knows, it’s awkward to ask for help; it's especially hard for the older job seeker. They were brought up to figure things out on their own. All the unemployed folks that I’ve trained or coached know that it’s not always WHAT you know but WHO you know. They’re trying; they just need some help

An interesting story on the news last evening, a mid west company offered valuable on the job training to middle & older aged unemployed workers in lieu of pay. The workers were still allowed to collect unemployment & at the end of the training period were offered a full time position if thier training was successful. Now that is what I call pulling it together. Why can' t we start something like this in New Jersey?

Hi Carol, I thought that there was something similar in NJ - I'll have to look into that. Several people in some of my training sessions have mentioned it. If I find something I will post a link. Thanks for commenting Carol. Nancy

Carol - the incentive I was thinking about is for people 50+ years of age and at a certain economic level. Here is the link:http://www.jobs4jersey.com/jobs4jersey/documents/HiringIncentivePrograms.WD-68.4-12.pdf It is in there with quite a few other programs that Workforce Development offers to businesses as an incentive.
