Goats Attempt Escape at Sandy Hook

The goats were brought to the Mortar Battery to feast on poison ivy.

Nearly a dozen goats escaped from their pen at the Mortar Battery at Sandy Hook, according to the Asbury Park Press.

The goats were brought to the national park to feast on poison ivy, which has overgrown to destructive levels, the Asbury Park Press reported.

The pen has a double row of fencing — the first electric, the second chain link, the Asbury Park Press said. A park employee brought the goats water Thursday when the electric fence was disconnected. The goats could not wander beyond the chain link fence.

The national park was expecting to have approximately two-dozen goats on its premises by the end of last week, according to the Asbury Park Press.
