The First Crocuses of 2014

Spring doesn’t officially start until next Thursday (March 20th), but I always feel it’s spring when he first lavender and white crocuses pop up out of our grass. How good it feels to see the first one, and then you look around and see another, and another, and then still more. Our snowdrops probably bloom even sooner, but they’re in the back corner of the house and we usually don’t look to see if they’re there until we see the crocuses.

This was a much colder (and some would say more normal) winter than we’ve had in the past few years. Two years ago we actually had daffodils blooming in January (http://rumsonfairhavenhome.wordpress.com/2012/02/04/daffodils-in-january/) but as of today I haven’t see any signs of yellow yet on the daffodil shoots.

When people tell me they intend to sell their house “next spring”, I always recommend they plant LOTS of daffodil bulbs the prior fall. Daffodil bulbs are inexpensive, and when you plant them in clumps of 5 or 7 they bring welcome splashes of color to your property. They’re easy to grow, they bloom in places that are shady most of the rest of the season, and they just multiply over the years.
