Is Renovation the Answer?

If you’ve been living in the Rumson-FairHaven area for a while, you have friends in the area, you know where to shop, you know where the parks are, etc. The time may come when your present home is too small (or too big) for you, or just doesn’t serve your needs. Unless you’re thinking of moving out of the area, you’ll have to decide whether to move or to stay.

Lots of people decide to move, and it can be easier just to buy a new home, move in and then put your old home up for sale. However, if you just LOVE your neighborhood or the grounds around your present house, you want to consider renovation. You’ll have to move out and live somewhere else while the work is being done, but once you move back you’ll have a “new” house that’s exactly what you want.

We live in the River Oaks area of Fair Haven and walk through the neighborhood with our dog every day. Several homes have been renovated in the past year, and currently there’s one on Kemp Avenue (photo above) that’s being renovated by area builder Spencer Foxworth. The improvement has been remarkable- what used to be a small, outdated ranch is being transformed and updated before our eyes.

Renovation’s not for everyone, and it often isn’t less expensive than buying a new home and selling your old one. However, don’t rule it out as an option.
