Garden Club of Fair Haven Mother’s Day Plant Sale

Everyone in our area looks forward to the Garden Club of Fair Haven’s annual plant sale, held on the Saturday before Mother’s Day.

This year the day began with a bit of rain, but that didn’t keep people away; and, by 10 a.m. the weather improved and folks were actively buying herbs, hostas, and all sort of great-looking plants.

Saturday’s buyers may have thought that this was the Garden Club of Fair Haven’s first event of the year, but that was hardly the case.

Terry Simboli, the club’s president, explained to me how in March the Garden Club of Fair Haven and the Garden Club of Rumson each had donated $500 to plant dune grass seedlings on the north side of Sea Bright to help restore the dunes after the devastation that had been caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The idea of the post-Sandy dune grass project drew national attention and resulted in a $5,000 grant from the National Garden Clubs. As a result, volunteers from both garden clubs planted 10,000 seedlings in March (dune grass seedlings can only be planted in March and in November).

This coming Wednesday, Garden Club of Fair Haven volunteers will join with volunteers from five other garden clubs (Little Silver, Middletown RFD, Navesink, Rumson and Shrewsbury) to begin a “Waves of Action” planting project on the east side of Ocean Avenue in Sea Bright. 

The project is being supported by a $1,000 grant from the Garden Club of New Jersey, and it will take several weeks to complete all of the planting.

If you bought some plants on Saturday, thank you. You can be sure that you’re supporting a wonderful club that’s engaged in lots of worthwhile projects that will benefit our area for years to come.
