3 Easy Ways to “Go Green” (and Save Some Money, Too)!

If you think that it's hard to "Go Green", here are 3 easy ideas that might change your mind.

Most people in our area are environmentally conscious. We’ve made recycling part of our daily routine. We believe in the slogan, “reduce, reuse, recycle”. Here are 3 easy ideas that you may not have thought of:

  1. Get rid of paper towels. Have you ever thought about how much you spend on paper towels, and how many paper towels go into the waste stream? There’s an easy alternative: use dish rags instead. Costco sells a pack of 24 white absorbent cotton wash cloths for a little over 50 cents per 12 inch x 12 inch cloth. When they get dirty, just throw them in the washer so you can reuse them. Once they get stained or not as white as you’d like them to be, use them for messier jobs until you don’t want to wash them again.
  2. Stop buying bottled water. Study after study shows that plain old tap water is just as good and just as healthy. Buy a couple of stainless steel water bottles. They come in various sizes, they’re rugged, and you can reuse them over and over again. In the warmer months, keep a glass pitcher filled with water in your refrigerator for a cool refreshing drink. I prefer glass and stainless steel because they’re far more inert than plastics, and there’s no concern about BPA or other possible contaminants.
  3. Use cold water for most of your clothes washing. One of my favorite web sites, DoYourPart.com says that 85% of the energy used to wash clothes is spent on heating the water. Modern laundry detergents work well in cold water, and you can always use a laundry pre-treatment on any stubborn stains.

How hard would it be to implement these 3 ideas in YOUR house? Not that hard, I’d imagine. You’ll be surprised how quickly you and your family get used to the new routines. Plus, you’ll save a little money that you can use to give yourself a little treat every week.

Who said that it’s not easy being green?
