Jakes Surf Trip

This week's surf trip is North Sumatra, Indonesia, in honor of a friend, Drew Eastwood, who left yesterday to be a surf guide at Aura Surf Resort.

Skip the crowded and polluted Bali and get away to the empty waves and beaches of North Sumatra.  This is a destination for surfers and surfers only.  There is not much going on other than the waves, which is perfect for surfers, but your girlfriend or wife might not want to come along.  Women cannot even wear bikinis on beaches because of local religious beliefs.

However, if you are going to surf, you will score waves.  North Sumatra is open to fetch more swell than anywhere else in the world.  There is nothing blocking Sumatra from receiving any swell the Indian Ocean can churn out.  At Aura Surf Resort (http://aurasurfresort.com/new/) in North Sumatra you will surf perfect reef, point, and beach breaks with just your traveling companions.  Explore on boat and find waves that are unnamed (yes you can name your own wave).  All and all it is a surfer's paradise.

Getting there is a journey.  You will need to fly to Medan, approximately a 30 hour journey.  From there a small plane will bring you to the Island.  The resort will organize your transportation from the airport.  The time difference is 11 hours so you are essentially on the other side of the world.  These are the sacrifices we make for perfect waves.

Visit the website listed above for more information and more photos of perfect waves.
