Sweet Way to Help Babies at Booskerdoo

The coffee shop in Fair Haven is running a diaper drive through New Year's Eve.

When it comes to holiday helpings at Booskerdoo, it's all about pies and diapers — they're calling it Booskerbooties.

Through the end of December, the coffee and homemade sweets shop, with stores in Fair Haven and Monmouth Beach, is running what has been dubbed its Booskerbooties Diaper Drive.

The drive to get diapers on the booties of babies in need in the area is being intertwined with the shop's take-home and made-to-order holiday menu.

It's simple. Through Dec. 20, 10 percent of anything ordered from the special menu will go toward the purchase of diapers for babies in need. You can also bring new, unopened diapers in any quantity to either of Booskerdoo’s locations in Fair Haven at 793 River Rd., or Monmouth Beach, at 36 Beach Rd. through Dec. 31. Any customer who brings in diapers will receive a coupon for a free cup of coffee. Monetary donations for diaper purchases are also accepted.

Owners/operators James and Amelia Caverly had a baby girl in February of this year, and immediately related to the reality that the need for such a necessity is overwhelming and rarely met in low income areas.

“Diapers are expensive and are most often not eligible for purchase through government assistance programs,” Amelia, also Booskerdoo’s executive baker, said. “Diapers are vital for the physical and mental state of babies and their families. A lack of diapers often precludes babies from day care centers, stumping early development and keeping parents out of the workplace.”

Booskerdoo’s bakery opened in June of 2013, after Amelia left a career of teaching Latin in NYC and social studies at Ranney School in Tinton Falls.

Amelia’s love for baking began with family pie recipes handed down from past generations. She met her Booskerdoo bakery crew, Diana Richter and Dan Felicetta, while training at the Monmouth County Culinary Program at Brookdale Community College.

The Booskerdoo desserts, made by Amelia and crew, use only fresh ingredients, and all are made-to-order. This year’s menu includes their can-free pumpkin pie, peppermint chocolate cake, a variety of cookies and salted caramel apple crisp pie.

The drive was met with much success from Thanksgiving sales, James said. And now the couple is gearing up for more.

Holiday orders are taken in advance at either Booskerdoo’s locations or by calling the bakery directly at 732-383-7196.
