Real Estate Taxes - PROTEST NOW!

Taxe Appeal, it is no fun

I appealed my Real Estate Tax bill earlier this year.  I filed my appeal in February and I was contacted by the Assessor's office in May.  As many of you may already know, you can negotiate with the assesor directly and come to an agreement or go to court.  The assesor, Steve Walters, and I agreed to a revised assessment of my Fair Haven Property.

Steve advised that he would have to go to the county board and get the process completed.  This was done and agreed to on July 13, 2012.  My property assessment was reduced by $109,000.  I still had to pay my third quarter tax based on the old assessment.  I did this.  The fourth quarter taxes were revised to reflect the overpayment.  However, when I received my fourth quarter bill, Fair Haven is also showing that for 2013 my taxes are based on the old evaluation.

I went to the office of Dale A. Connor in person today to have what I thought was a mistake corrected.  I show Ms. Connor the judgement papers, (which she said she had a copy of), and the fact that they gave me a credit for the 4rth quarter taxes.  So I have a judgement, Ms. Connor acknowledges this and a credit was given.

So, you would think that the reduced assessed value would be used for 2013.  No!!!!

Ms. Connor states that she used the old number and can not change her books and that she has nothing to do with the assessed value.  THIS IS CRAZY!!!  You have a judgement, an acknowledgement and yet I still have to pay taxes based on the old assessed value for 2013.  THIS IS STEALING.

Has this happened to anyone else?  Is there anything I can do?
