Governor Chris Christie appointed The Rumson Country Day School’s own Jayne Carmody as a new member the New Jersey Historical Commission. Mrs. Carmody, who is head of the RCDS Lower School, will meet with the commission six times a year.
The Historical Commission’s mission is to enrich the lives of the public by preserving the historical record and promoting awareness of New Jersey’s rich and interesting heritage. “I am delighted, honored and humbled to be in the company of such an astute group of well-respected historians who possess rich backgrounds in historical archaeology. I am learning as much as I hope I can give,” she said.
Mrs. Carmody’s former role as Middle States Association President first put her on the radar as an educator who was diligent in promoting educational programs in New Jersey. With a keen interest in preserving and celebrating New Jersey history in the classroom, Mrs. Carmody will help the commission look at history through the lens of an educator. She is particularly interested in developing new programs and events that highlight New Jersey’s unique heritage and bring history closer to the children. “This year, RCDS third and fourth graders will participate in field trips that concentrate on New Jersey. There are so many exciting educational opportunities to focus on history closer to home that brings it to life for students and their families.

Mrs. Carmody’s appointment comes at an especially good time as New Jersey is approaching its 350th anniversary in 2014, a notable milestone in the life of the state. Since its creation in 1664, New Jersey has played a pivotal role in the shaping of American life and culture. Today, NJ is home to 21 Fortune 500 companies, more than 1,100 multinationals from 40 nations and numerous acclaimed film, TV, literary and sport figures.
According to the New Jersey Historical Commission, the upcoming anniversary presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate the state’s contributions to the nation and the world: three themes have been designated to help frame the anniversary: innovation (Thomas Edison’s light bulb, Atlantic City Boardwalk, Frank Sinatra and Count Basie), diversity (NJ is a microcosm of the U.S.) and liberty (played a pivotal role in the American Revolution and was the first state to ratify the Bill of Rights in 1789).

Fifty years ago, New Jersey observed the state’s 300th anniversary with a variety of events, celebrations and programs that included a mobile NJ history museum, commemorative stamps, souvenirs, and a series of commemorative publications. In 2014, local and statewide events will be held to highlight the themes and special programs will feature the unique foods, music, people, and traditions that make New Jersey so special. Congratulations to Mrs. Carmody on her appointment, and the RCDS school community looks forward to an exciting year filled with NJ history.
