Ortley Beach: Toms River Office of Emergency Management Coordinator takes Patch on a tour

In southern Jersey on the shore ...

With access to the barrier island still restricted to property owners and cleanup crews, Toms River Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Paul Daley provided a tour of Hurricane Sandy-ravaged Ortley Beach.

From the east end of the island, where surges wiped out boardwalks and tore down homes, to the west end, where 12 hours of flooding created large sink holes and untold amounts of property damage, Ortley Beach a month after Sandy's arrival on New Jersey's shores is still an image of destruction.

Work is being done and Daley is confident the barrier island will be restored. How long that will take, however, remains to be seen. The above are images shot Friday afternoon in Ortley Beach, which many claim was ground zero for Sandy's arrival.
