Power Out, Trees and Power Lines Down After Irene Hit Rumson and Fair Haven

Police are urging people to stay in their homes until the State of Emergency is lifted.

Trees and power lines are down as residents in Rumson and Fair Haven wake to homes with no power after being pounded by .

sent out a message to residents urging them to stay inside their homes: “Be advised due to Hurricane Irene there are numerous live power lines down on the ground or tangled in trees. Use extreme caution if you need to leave your home. All residents are urged to stay in your homes until the storm has passed and the state of emergency is lifted.”

Police say they do not know when power will be restored to the area. Police have requested that residents refrain from calling the station to inquire about the outage so that the lines will remain open for emergencies and people reporting damages.

According to Borough Administrator Tom Rogers, the shelter at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School is still open. “Once the tide clears at approx noon, the center will close. Anyone still in need of shelter will be relocated to another county shelter,” he said.

Department of Public Works crews are out cleaning up after the storm. They are very busy removing trees from the streets so they are clear for emergency crews.

Over in Fair Haven, some residents have power but there is some tree damage and power lines down. "Roads are mostly clear, but people should try to stay inside," said Mayor Halfacre. "Our PD, FD and DPW have been doing a tremendous job all night."
