NJ Transit Heightens Security in Response to Explosions at Boston Marathon

Additional officers, both in uniform and dressed in plain clothes, will patrol the transit system, according to spokesperson.

NJ Transit is in a "heightened state of alert" in response to several explosions reported at the Boston Marathon this afternoon, according to NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr.

“While there has been no specific threat made to our transit system at this time, NJ Transit police have deployed both uniformed and plain clothed officers to further patrol our system and keep our customers safe," Durso said in a press release. 

At least two people were killed and numerous people were injured in Boston this afternoon when there were  two explosions within a mile of the Boston Marathon's finish line, according to Back Bay Patch.

Another explosion was reported at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, however reports now indicate that that may have actually been an unrelated fire. The incident is considered ongoing by authorities, causing heightened security in the northeast. 

Durso said that customers should immediately report any suspicious or unusual activity they witness to NJ Transit police at 1-888-TIPS-NJT.

“The hearts and thoughts of all of us at NJ TRANSIT go out to those affected by this senseless tragedy," said in the release.
