Faring Stormy Weather in Sea Bright

Ocean Avenue is flooding. Will the borough survive the nor'easter without undoing progress made since Hurricane Sandy?

The remnants of Hurricane Sandy's wrath and rebuilding are pillars of recovery in Sea Bright.

Large footings have been pummelled into the sand where Sea Bright's Chapel Beach Club stood before Hurricane Sandy. A beach cabana sits in the middle of the public beach parking lot. A pile of debris and personal belongings mark the site of a demolished home, still not yet cleared away. A pump sits at the end of Center Avenue on the Shrewsbury River stationed to stave off flooding. Cliffs of sand are formed on the beach — a sign of replenishment ripped away from last week's storm.

And this morning, on the cusp of a nor'easter, the people of the small borough sandwiched between the ocean and Shrewsbury River, were continuing on with their day hoping for minimal to no impact. As of about 5 p.m., Ocean Avenue was closed due to flooding.

A tiny sign on a mailbox read, "God bless us all." Work activity is on hold. It was windy, but there was no flooding yet, as of about 1 p.m.

Sea Bright Mayor Dina Long has not issued any evacuation orders or severe warnings. As it is, only about 40 percent or less of the residents are back home after Sandy. Long only cancelled tonight's Town Hall meeting in anticipation of poor weather conditions and the possiblity of flooding.

"Due to the nor'easter which is anticipated for tomorrow, March 6th, the Borough is cancelling the town hall meeting which had been scheduled at 7:30 p.m.," the mayor's message on the borough Web site said last night. "The next town hall meeting will now take place on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 as previously scheduled."

Some businesses, such as Woody's Ocean Grille, stayed open, despite the flooding.
