Celebration: Oceanic Bridge Re-opening

The re-opening of the is considered a big reason to celebrate, especially for , Fair Haven and Middletown residents.

And everyone will have their chance to do just that at the official ribbon cutting and re-opening ceremony, hosted by area and Monmouth County Officials, at 10 a.m. on Friday morning on the bridge.

The 98-foot drawbridge span of the 2,754-foot-long historic art deco bridge . Work on what is called the bascule (moveable) span included: installation of a new grid deck, replacement and rehabilitation of deck support steel, beams and catwalk. Rust was also removed and metal was sanded and repainted.

County officials promised the bridge would re-open in time for Memorial Day weekend and be better equipped to handle the estimated 12,000 vehicles a day that traverse it.

Monmouth County Engineer Joseph Ettore recently told Patch that the good winter weather helped speed up what he called a “reasonable, but aggressive” schedule to complete the repairs.
The bridge spans Rumson and the Locust and Navesink sections of Middletown.

Many people cross it regularly for recreational walking, running and biking purposes over the Navesink River.

Patch was out and about in Rumson and Sea Bright today and there was a lot of buzz about the “happy day” of the bridge re-opening approaching. Judging from what we heard today, a crowd is expected to show up.
