July 3rd Without KaBoom! on the Navesink

A look at last year's event, and crowds.

It's been an annual tradition for more than 50 years — fireworks on the Navesink River.

They have forever been a part of the summer kick-off in the Rumson-Fair Haven area. In recent years, however, KaBoom! Fireworks on the river, anchored in Red Bank, grew too large, according to borough officials, who no longer felt it worthwhile to help support the financial burden. And Rumson followed suit (see related story).

According to organizers of the annual event, billed the best fireworks show in the state and one of the tops in the country, KaBoom! costs grew to about $250,000 a year. Police and insurance costs made it too expensive to keep the event going, officials said.
