5 Things You Need to Know Today: Sept. 30

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Sunny Skies:  According to the National Weather Service, today will be partly sunny with a high near 77 degrees with a southwest wind around 13 mph. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly after 4pm. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low around 59 degrees and a southwest wind 6 to 9 mph becoming north. There is a chance of showers in the late night as well.

2. Trashy News: Trash will no longer be picked up twice a week in Fair Haven after Friday, September 30. The summer schedule ends Friday and starting Monday, trash will be picked up by once a week. Brush and leaf pick up also starts in October. Click to see the message from the for more details.

3. Give Blood, Save Lives: The Knights of Columbus blood drive will take place on Saturday, October 1, 2011 from 8 AM to 4 PM at the Knights of Columbus Red Bank Council 3187 located at 200 Fair Haven Road in Fair Haven. People can sign up on the web at http://kofc3187.com/Activities.html but walk in's will also be accepted.

4. Run Dawgs, Run! will join the No. 1 boys cross country team in the nation and a star Kenyan who looks to make a run at a course record in the annual Shore Coaches Invitational meet this Saturday at Holmdel Park. The event features more than 100 teams on both the boys and girls sides from around the state squaring off on the 5,000-meter course. 5. This Weekend is Popin': There are lots more events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven this weekend including:

- Popcorn Sale: The Boy Scouts of Fair Haven Troop 125 will be selling Trails End Popcorn as their annual fundraiser. The Scouts will be outside of the ACME on River Road in Fair Haven on Saturday, Oct. 1st from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Clickfor more information.

- Touch-A-Truck: This fundraiser hosted by the Newcomers Club of Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver and Shrewsbury will feature fire trucks, a police car, construction vehicles, an ambulance and many more! Children will be allowed to touch, climb and ask questions about their favorite trucks or vehicles and yes, even honk the horns (parents bring your earplugs!) all within a safe and supervised environment. Cost is $10 per child, $5 for each additional child, max $30 per family (cash or check only) Click for more information.

- Harvest Fest: The Fair Haven PTA is hosting their annual Harvest Fest this Saturday. Once a small event held at the Fair Haven Firehouse, HARVEST FEST has grown to be a wonderful Fair Haven tradition, which takes hundreds of volunteers to make happen. The event will include pony rides, the  trackless train, the very popular pumpkin decorating contest, and an apple pie bake-off.  Pies are judged by special faculty and PTA judges; entry fees are $3 each.
