5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 31

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Hot and Humid:  Today will be sunny with a high near 78 degrees. Although the temperature is not too hot, the air will be very muggy and thick. According to the National Weather Service, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Monmouth County. This means that children, people with asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases should avoid strenuous activity or exercise outdoors. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 65. South wind between 3 and 8 mph.

2. Big Time Ballin':  When it came to securing a Division I look, RFH Senior Kevin Alter knew that many coaches would simply cross his name off their lists because of his height, so he had to find other ways to stand out. He developed NBA range on his 3-point shot and did his best to use his quickness to his advantage against bigger players, exciting fans with his high-energy play. He lived in the gym, spending every free moment working on his game. And, his hard work paid off. Clickto read about Alter and his decision to play with D1 basketball at Navy.

3. Prom Weekend: On May 26th, the graduating class of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH)  attended prom on a small cruise ship, the Cornucopia Princess. After traveling in yellow buses from their school to the Atlantic Highlands Marina, the students boarded the ship around 7:30 pm and sailed to Manhattan and back. Located only miles from the Rumson-Fair Haven area, this recreational destination has landed on the list in the NJ Sea Grant Consortium's Top Ten Beaches poll. Each year, the NJ Sea Grant Consortium and The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Coastal Research Center conducts the poll, asking residents and visitors to rate New Jersey beaches. The results are traditionally announced in the days before Memorial Day, the unofficial start to the summer season. 5. Honoring Those Who Have Served: For Memorial Day, Rumson and Fair Haven both celebrated with borough parades. The residents were very lucky as the rain stopped and the clouds parted making the weather turn to sunshine for a beautiful day to be outside honoring those who have served our county. After the parades, many residents went to barbecues, boating or the beach. Check back on the Rumson-Fair Haven Patch later today to see photos from these community events.
