5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 3

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Sunny Skies: According to the National Weather Service, today will be beautiful! They say it will be mostly sunny with a high in the 70's. Take advantage of this beautiful weather by stopping by one of the borough's beautiful parks. Admire the trees, take your dog for a walk or stop by the 9/11 memorial to honor our community's fallen heros. Tonight, there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11pm. Increasing clouds with a low around 55.

2. It's About Time! On the night of May 1, President Obama announced to the country that Osama Bin Laden, the Mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks was dead. Rumson and Fair Haven lost over 15 community members at ground zero ten years ago. Patch caught up with some local residents to see their reaction to this news. Click to see the video.

3.  Pink Pancakes: Fair Haven community members woke up early Sunday morning and filled the Fair Haven Fire House for the “Pink Haven” Pancake Breakfast sponsored, by Cub Scout Pack #127. The fire house was brimming with people, all looking forward to enjoying a delicious breakfast while supporting a great cause. This year's breakfast raised over $10,ooo to be split between the Walsh Family Charities, which helps aid in breast cancer research and care, and Paint the Town Pink, a community wide effort presented by Riverview Medical Center to “raise awareness of the importance of breast cancer prevention, detection and treatment.” Click here to read more about the event.

4. House Tour: This year’s Stately Homes By-the-SeaDesigner Show House- the Holly Hill estate on Navesink River Road in Locust-  is now open for viewing thanks to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey (VNACJ) .The house will be available for viewing from May 3 through June 12, 2011. More than 35 of the nation's and local area's top interior designers, decorators and landscape artists began working their magic on Feb 25. transforming  a different room or portion of the grounds. Click to see "before" pictures and learn more about the house. Hours of Operation at Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00-4:00 p.m. General Admission is $35.

5. A Gift for Mom: Still looking for a Mother's Day gift? Stop by the Oceanic Free Library and check out the beautiful Murano glass jewelry that is on display and for sale. Designer and entrepreneur Joan Laurie grew up in Rumson and had a fruitful career as a nurse. She decided to start this jewelry business after traveling to Italy and falling in love with the art.
