5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 23

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Rainy Days: Repack that umbrella because according to the National Weather Service, more rain is heading our way this week. Today will be cloudy with a high near 69. There will be a chance of showers throughout the day with thunderstorm likely after 2:00 p.m. There will be patchy fog before 8am. The showers will continue through the night with a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8pm and 2am. There will be a low around 62.

2. A Great Find: After a week of downpours, Saturday was a perfectly sunny day for the Fair Haven Town Wide Yard Sale. Over 50 retailers and over 100 households took part in the 2nd annual event. Storeowners held side walk sales along River Road while shoppers could use the supplied map to hunt out bargains at the yard sales throughout town. 3.  Everyday Heros: Last week, Fair Haven took time to honor their volunteers who serve the community through EMS service. Mayor Michael Halfacre announced that the week of May 15, 2011 will be celebrated as Emergency Medical Services Week in Fair Haven. Mayor Halfacre stated, "With the theme, EMS: Everyday Heroes, I encourage the community to observe this week with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities." 4. Out With the Old: The REAL Jersey Shore's Lauren Mattia took time this week to celebrate the life of a Fair Haven cottage. After hearing about a 100 year old cottage that was sold for new construction, Mattia decided to visit her old neighborhood where she grew up to pay homage to the quaint ranches and cottages left of the street as most have been demolished and rebuilt with much bigger and more modern homes. 5. Home Run: With a pair of mercy-rule losses to Shore Conference powers Jackson Memorial and Ocean, Rumson-Fair Haven’s baseball team had sunk to 2-7 and appeared on the way to a lost season by mid-April. During that same low point, the father of head coach Kevin James died at 79 years old in Georgia on April 16, making it an emotional time for a team at a crossroads. When Rumson needed them most, a group of leaders who have been as effective as any in James’ 14 years as a varsity head coach stepped to the front to ignite a dramatic turnaround.
