A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Rain, Rain, Go Away: According to the National Weather Service, expect rain and thunderstorms all day with a high around 59 degrees. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. There will be a East wind between 14 and 16 mph. Tonight, the rain and wind will continue with a low around 57 degrees. 

2. Cups & Cakes: You know you’ve got a sweet tooth. Do you know the best way to fill it? Stop by Rumson’s hottest café, Cups & Cakes, where the freshest baked delights are offered daily. Cups & Cakes opened at 114 E. River Road in Rumson on September 1 of last year and is co-owned by Rumson residents Denise Kelleher and Elizabeth Shiftan. Kelleher and Shiftan bring their expertise and special recipes to their menu, including muffins, scones, cinnamon roll cookies, quiche and customized cakes. 3. Sailing Away: On May 7 and 8, 2011 the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) Sailing Team traveled all the way to Austin, Texas to compete in the ISSA High School National Championship for the Mallory Trophy. The regatta, held on Lake Travis out of Austin Yacht Club, was an invitation-only event featuring 20 high school teams who qualified from their respective districts. 4. The History of Lifeguarding: He started lifeguarding in 1964. Almost fifty years later, Michael Fowler became lifeguard supervisor for Monmouth County Park System, is still at it. Fowler’s recently published book, Lifeguarding at the Jersey Shore, co-authored by Bernard Olsen and Edward Olsen, was the subject of a “Historically Speaking” lecture and digital photo presentation held at Monmouth County Historical Association Museum & Library in Freehold on Sunday. 5. Changes to Public Access to Waterfront: The state Department of Environmental Protection held a meeting in Jersey City on Monday giving the public a chance to sound off on proposed changes to rules governing waterfront access, which would impact the Two Rivers as well as the beaches on Jersey Shore. They are holding a second meeting at Stockton College today. Under the revision, New Jersey municipalities would come up with their own plans for how access is provided, subject to DEP approval, and weaken the agency’s oversight.
