5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 10

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Sunny Skies: Grab your shades as you walk out the door today. According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny with a high near 65. This great spring weather makes for perfect conditions for a stroll in a local park or browsing through one of the two borough's business district. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 51.

2. Reap What You Sow: This spring, Rumson students will reap what they sow – literally. Learning outside of the classroom has been a part of Forrestdale School’s science curriculum for years with the addition of its greenhouse. Interested in more hands-on learning opportunities, parents Annie McGinty and Tammy Perconti met with Superintendent Scott Feder to discuss expanding the existing garden program. With the support of the Forrestdale staff and Rumson Garden Club, the Rumson School Board approved an edible garden proposal. Click to read more about this project.

3.  Let Me Upgrade Ya: Anyone who gets a behind the scenes look at the DPW offices realizes that the building is in need of repair. Offices are cramped, a bathroom is in disrepair, and a makeshift tool room behind a garage that also houses large trucks, needs work. There is also a sitting room that needs expansion. That room accommodates 12, but there are 26 public works employees. The building, courtesy of a state grant, has already had some upgrades completed. The additional work will be completed with funding from an issuance of a bond by the Rumson Borough, of approximately $200,000, said Wellner. Click to read more about this project.

4. Super Search is On, Again: Rumson School District Superintendent Scott Feder officially announced his resignation citing “cost of living” reasons, and now the district’s search for another superintendent begins anew after only a year and a half. Feder was hired in January 2010 and announced his resignation officially last week. He will be taking over as superintendent of the Millstone School District. Click to read more about his resignation and the board's plans to replace him.
