5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 7th

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is the list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Basketball Fans: It is March Madness and a lot is happening on the basketball courts around Rumson and Fair Haven.

  • The RFH girls will move on, but the boys are done. The boys' basketball team lost to Ewing High School in the semifinals on Friday night. It was a close game with a final score of 51-53.The Lady Bulldogs had a 53-34 victory in the semifinal round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 2 tournament in Berkeley Heights on Friday night. The girls will face Shabazz High School from Newark on March 8th.
  • Over at Rumson Country Day School, the boys' basketball team brought home the title after beating the Ranney Panthers in the championship game.
  • Knollwood girls went through their season 20-0, easily winning their League Championship and are the #2 seed in the Run for the Roses tourney in Belmar. They had their first tourney game sat and they destroyed Spring Lake Heights 52-17.

2. Pet Contest: The winners of the Patch Pet Photo Contest were announced this weekend. If your pet made the top 5, send an email to noel.aliseo@patch.com with your name and address to claim your prize.

3. 99 Years: There are only 5 days left to get tickets to the Fair Haven 99th Anniversary Cocktail Party. The event will be held at the Raven and the Peach. Tickets cost $5o a person and $99 a couple. Tickets to a special VIP wine room at the event will cost an additional $25. Sponsorship opportunities at the event are $250.  Registration forms are available on the borough's website at www.fairhavennj.org and should be sent to the Centennial Committee at 748 River Road, Fair Haven, NJ 07704. The deadline to register is March 11.

4. Scottish Pride: A local family marched through the rain in the St. Patrick's Day Parade yesterday in Belmar. They play the bag pipes and drums in the Atlantic Watch band, which performs at parades and festivals throughout New Jersey. This band practices on Thursday nights at the River Street Primary School in Red Bank and is free and open to anyone who wants to learn. Click to see a video from their last practice.
