5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 4th

A round-up of information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven.

Here's a list of things you need to know today:

1. Reaching Out: The Knollwood School Student Council hosted a blood drive with the help of Central Jersey Blood Center yesterday. 35 student council members invited at least one person to commit to an appointment, but that does not mean their blood will be donated. There are many factors that may defer people from donating blood. Some of these factors include: iron levels, temperature, blood pressure and travel. Click to learn more about the blood drive.

2. Bulldog Fans: Both the girl's and boy's basketball teams from Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School will play in the post-season state basketball tournament semifinals tonight. The moved forward in the tournament after big on Wednesday night. The Lady Dogs will face Gov. Livingston High School from Berkley Heights while the boys take on Ewing High School. Make sure to come out and support both teams as they push towards the finals!

3. A Family Affair for St. Patty's Celebrations: Atlantic Watch, a local bag pipe band, practiced last night for what they consider their "season opener", the Belmar Parade. Two Rumson twins, Lizzie and Maggie Boyce will play drums in the parade on Sunday for the first time. They have marched with the group before, but this is the first year they will march as musicians. Marching along with them will be their step-father Kevin, older sister Elenor, and two older brothers, Corey and William.

4.  Forrestdale Students Create African Library: The 4th and 5th graders of the Forrestdale Book Club have been collecting books  in order to start a library in Africa. They successfully reached over 1,000 book, which is the number needed to do so. They are now in the next step in the process, which is raising $500 to cover the shipping costs. As of Thursday, they had collected about $280 so far. They are hoping to raise the money through donations.  To learn more about the project, you can contact Jamie Walsack, Book Club advisor, by e-mail: jwalsack@rumsonschool.org
