5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 29

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Shaded Vision: Put on those shades as you head out the door. According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny with a high near 45. Northwest wind between 14 and 18 mph. Tonight is expected to be mostly clear, with a low around 31. Soak up the sun while you can, because showers are expected from Wednesday-Saturday.

2. Fat Check: Bob and Joan Rechnitz, founders of the Two River Theater, donated $5 million towards construction of Riverview Medical Center's new surgery center. The reason they chose Riverview? “It’s a local hospital,” Bob said. “Our children were born there. When we need help we go there. And, I imagine my final days will be spent there.” The $5 million will be used to help fund construction on the new center for surgical excellence, which will include two sophisticated specialty surgical suites, a renovated post-anesthesia care area, and a state-of-the-art conference and educational center, among other things.

3.  Rosy Victory: After dominating their division for the second year in a row, the Girls' Basketball Team was crowned Queens of the Roses at the St. Rose Run for the Roses Basketball Tournament. The team participated in the tournament in Belmar the weekend of March 20, 2011. The tournament is regarded as one of the premier tournaments in the state for middle school players. Not only did a team from Fair Haven take home the tournament trophy, but the team from Rumson won the Team Sportsmanship Award. Both Knollwood and Forrestdale represented our area with pride. 4. RFH Budget Hearing: There will be a public hearing to discuss the 2011-2012 budget tonight at 7:30 p.m. The budget being discussed includes a 1.1% tax increase, which will show a decrease in taxes for Rumson residents and just over a $1o increase for Fair Haven residents. If you are interested in learning more about this budget, head to the high school library tonight.
