5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 29

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Summer Sunshine: According to the National Weather Service, today will be a beautiful beach day with sunny skies and a high near 82 degrees. There will be a Northwest wind between 8 and 14 mph. Tonight will be mostly clear with a low around 65 degrees and a North wind between 7 and 10 mph. 

2. Bright Nights: Nights will be getting a little brighter for residents on Circle Drive in Rumson within the next couple weeks. After nearly 60 residents signed a petitions stressing the need for new street lights on their drive, the Rumson Bourough Council has put in a request to JCP&L to have them installed. The concern for street lighting came as a result of the recent car break-ins around the area. Click to read more about this story.

3. Feline Frenzy: Looking for a furry friend to play with this summer? Kitten season started early this year and the MCSPCA is in crisis mode as the cat population has hit a record 565 cats. There are three ways to help these purrfectly wonderful felines – adopt, foster or donate. As of now, the organization is running a Five Dollar Feline adoption promotion and Kittens are 2 for $50. Now is the time to get a new BFF (or two) who comes ready to go - spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped! Clickfor more information.

4. Firework Tradition: The Rumson Annual 4th of July Fireworks Show will be held on Sunday, July 3, 2011 off of Victory Park. The fireworks will be in synchronization with Red Bank's and a medley of patriotic and popular music by Q104.3. The Oceanic Bridge and the roads surrounding Victory Park including River Rd. will be closed before, during and after the show. 5.  Rockin' the Beach: The Sandy Hook Foundation is sponsoring a summer's worth of free concerts every Wednesday at Beach Area E of the Hook beginning at 6 p.m. Concert-goers can bring beach chairs and pack a picnic dinner while listening, dancing and singing to the music of terrific Jersey Shore acts. Tonight's concert features Tim McLoone and the Shirleys. Click for more information.
