5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 28

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Chance of Showers: According to the National Weather Service, today will be partly cloudy with a high around 80 degrees. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms starting around 5:00 p.m. this evening. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low around 70 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms likely to continue into the night mainly before midnight. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. 

2. Scouts Honor: Mayor Halfacre proudly read a proclamation at the council meeting on June 27 congratulating Stephen Becker, member of the Boy Scouts of America, for recently received the honor of being named an Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Becker built a new bridge over Fourth Creek in the Fair Haven Fields Natural Area. The creek exits into the Navesink and starts in the irrigation pond in the natural area. Click to read more about this scout and his project.

3. Sparkle and Shine: As part of its Sparkle and Shine essay contest, KaBoom! Fireworks, the United Way of Monmouth County, and Wells Fargo Bank awarded five area students with scholarships worth $500 for writing about how they’ve made their community sparkle and shine. The contest, open to all Monmouth County residents from grades 5 through 12, was judged by local non-profit agencies, schools, universities and the United Way. Second overall was Julianna Sacket, of Rumson. Sacket, a fifth grader, told a great story about helping the homeless in her community. Click to read more about this contest.

4. Bicentennial Bucks: The Fair Haven Historic Preservation Commission handed over a $80,000 check to the Borough of Fair Haven at the council meeting on June 27, 2011. This money was saved after over a decade of fund raising events in order to help restore Bicentennial Hall, also known as Fisk Chapel.
