5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 24

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Rainy Days: According to the National Weather Service, today will be Mostly cloudy with a high near 77 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly after 1:00 p.m. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. Southeast wind between 7 and 11 mph. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low around 67. Showers and thunderstorms will continue throughout the night mainly before 5:00 a.m. 

2. Doctor On Duty: Dr. Shanda McManus makes house calls and is only a telephone call away from whatever ails you. Call it retro medicine because this is how it was once upon a time when doctors came to your home and spent quality time with their patients.  She makes house calls in Red Bank, Rumson, Fair Haven, Shrewsbury and Little Silver. 3. Whiz Kid: The New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) awarded a $2,000 scholarship to 25 high school seniors in the state. Matthew Kurtas, a graduate from the Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH), was one of those chosen. Kurtas was also the Class of 2011 co-valedictorian. Click to read more about this Whiz Kid.

4. State News:  After a day filled with rallies and protests outside the statehouse in Trenton, the Assembly has backed legislation that will increase contributions by public employees to their health care and pension costs, now sending the bills to Gov. Chris Christie to be signed into law. The Assembly voted Thursday evening, three days after the state Senate’s  Gov. Christie is expected to sign the legislation into law Monday. 5. Skateboarding on Water: Now in its eighth year, SkimBash 2011 has proven to be a premier event for pro and amateur skimboarders from across the country. The contest will be on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sea Bright Public Beach. Spectators can enjoy music, food and giveaways as they enjoy top-notch skim boarding. Amateur entry fee is $35 plus a $15 Skim USA membership fee if you are not a 2011 member; semi-pro entry fee is $50 plus Skim USA membership; pro entry fee is $100 plus Skim USA membership; spectators must pay an $8 beach access fee.
