5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 10

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Slightly Cooler: According to the National Weather Service, today will be partly sunny with a high near 83 degrees. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2:00 p.m. There will be a northeast wind between 7 and 10 mph becoming calm. Tonight, there is a chance the showers and thunderstorms will continue with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 67 degrees.

2. Triathlon for a Loved Volunteer: This Sunday, a children's triathlon will be held at Victory Park in Rumson to honor a man who touched his community through his devoted volunteerism. Robert Kelleher passed away in July of 2009 from a sudden heart condition. Kelleher was captain of the RFAS when he passed away two years ago. 3. Local Teens Ball Out: The Junior Cancer Ball Committee is a group of 7 dedicated teenagers in the area who have committed their time and effort in helping the Senior Cancer Ball Committee and the American Cancer Society  create one of the most magnificent and charitable events in New Jersey: The Cancer Ball. Throughout the past year, a great deal of effort has gone into the planning, organization, and assembly of the Cancer Ball and the Junior Committee has helped in any way possible during each step of the process. 4. Get Fired Up: From the field to the canton to the union, Rumson Boy Scouts of America  (BSA) Troop 201 honored and burned older flags during their annual Flag Burning ceremony on June 8 in Victory Park. More than fifty parents and scouts gathered along the shoreline of Victory Park to watch the special presentation, which included recitations from the U.S. Code on flag burning, scout pledges and chants and the presentation of the first burnt flag’s grommets. 5. Run Dawgs, Run! The Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School women’s track and field team sent four female athletes to the New Jersey State Meet of Champions held June 9. Rachel Christ, a sophomore, and Shannon McCarthy, a junior, both ran the individual 800 meters, before joining teammates Molly Hellman, also a junior,  and Courtney Howley, a freshman, to compete in the 4 x 800 meter relay. The Meet of Champions is the ultimate competition in New Jersey high school track, showcasing the top track athletes in the state.
