5 Things You Need to Know Today: August 3

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Chance of Showers: According to the National Weather Service, today will be mostly cloudy with a high near 83 degrees. There is a 20 percent change of Isolated showers and thunderstorms after 3:00 p.m. and an east wind 7 to 9 mph becoming south. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low around 69 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms likely before 2am, then a slight chance of showers and a south wind around 8 mph.

2. Coastal Celebration: Nicole Rice opened shop three years ago in a smaller store just a few doors down from her current location at 803 River Road. She had previously lived in California as an Interior Designer and her love for all things coastal was the idea for her store. To celebrate the third year of Coastal Decor, Rice is having an event at her shop on August 4th from 5:00-9:00p.m. Food and drinks will be served and there will be special sales for all of her loyal customers and some new ones too. 3. Tree Decision Delayed: Outraged Rumson  will have to wait yet another month to get an answer from the town Planning Board about the clear cutting case on. Monday night, the Rumson Planning Board heard Richard Jones and Cynthia Zipf's presentation of their case against the apparent clear cutting that occurred on 35 Navesink Avenue. Specifically, Jones and Zipf were appealing the decision of the Tree Conservation Officer, Frederick Andre, in the issuance of a tree removal permit for 35 Navesink Ave. Click to read how the meeting went.

4. National Night Out: Fair Haven Police Department hosted a National Night Out celebration. National Night Out was started in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch to generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, to strengthen police-community relationships and to send a message to criminals that citizens are fighting back. 5. Your Oyster: Convinced that the humble oyster can improve the quality of the Raritan Bay, a small army of scientists and citizen volunteers embarked on research project this summer that had them taking notes along 20 miles of shoreline, over shell-strewn beaches, alongside docks, and reedy swamps from Keyport, through Union Beach, down through Port Monmouth, Highlands, Navesink and out along the bay shore of Sandy Hook.
