5 Things You Need to Know Today: August 26

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Sun Before the Storm: Get out and enjoy the weather before the rain begins. According to the National Weather Service, today will be mostly sunny with a high near 85 degrees. There will be a north wind at 6 mph becoming east. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. There will be a south wind between 3 and 6 mph. 

2. Fair Starts Today: Today is the opening day for the Fair Haven Fireman's Fair. The Fair runs from Friday, August 26th through Saturday night of Labor Day weekend. The fair is closes on Sunday, but re-opens on Monday. The hours of operation are 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Click here to see what locals have said about their favorite fair traditions. Even though the fair is closed on Sunday and unlikely to be affected by the pending hurricane, Fire Chief Wade Davis said they are preparing the grounds for the high winds and down pours. "Weather contingencies for the Fair, include: Game trailers will be secured shut; The ride vendor has weather procedures in place, such as securing the rides from the strong winds; and the Fire Company members may have to remove the front dining room tent, so it doesn't blow away. Also, we will secure any loose items on the grounds."

3. Sidewalk Sales: Get ready to get your shop on! Fair Haven Businesses are having their. The sale will be from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today and Saturday. This event always coincides with the opening days of the Firemen's Fair!

4. Getting Ready: Residents are preparing now for Hurricane Irene, which is expected to hit the area on Sunday.  throughout the area have been inundated with requests to retrieve boats and store them to prevent damage from surging waters and winds, which could reach sustained speeds of more than 100 miles per hour if the hurricane arrives as a category two storm. 5. Evacuation: Sea Bright will be officially announcing a mandatory evacuation early this afternoon, according to Patrick Mason Jr., the emergency management coordinator. "We are working on the paperwork right now, and it will be announced early this afternoon," Mason told Patch around 10:20 a.m. on Friday. The evacuation is scheduled to take effect at 4 p.m. on Friday, thorough Saturday at 4 p.m. That leaves residents and businesses to heed the evacuation orders within 24 hours.
