5 Things You Need to Know Today: April 4

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Grey Skies: After a beautiful weekend, there are clouds and gloom heading our way. According to the National Weather Service, Monday is expected to be cloudy with a high around 60. Showers are possible throughout the morning, so make sure you throw an umbrella in your car as you head out of the house.

2. Brush It Off: Over 24 people helped out with a Spring cleaning at the Fair Haven Natural Area Volunteer Work Day. At the annual event, volunteers helped clean up brush throughout the area, free Derry’s Pond from big logs, remove fallen limbs from the meadow and cut back holly on the trails. They worked from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 2nd to clean up the damage the harsh winter has left behind and get the area ready for the nicer weather.

3. Spring Cleaning: There is more to the dreaded “spring cleaning” besides scrubbing tiles, vacuuming carpets, washing windows, and laundering upholstery. Home maintenance is a big part of prolonging the life of your house, keeping it a safe and stable home. Click here to read some essential home maintenance tips.

4. One Man's Trash: The warmer weather and spring cleaning means local residents will be looking to sell their unwanted items at garage and yard sales. Lauren Mattia from The REAL Jersey Shore takes us on a journey to Oak Place in Fair Haven to see the people and unique items Margie Sheehan's garage sale last April. Click here to watch the video.

5. Treasure Box: RFH is collecting items for troops overseas. Recently, a request came from a student whose Dad has been deployed to the Middle East. As part of his Air Force duties, he is meeting many servicemen and women who would benefit from some much needed items from home, and he plans to make a “Treasure Box” that can be utilized by these troops as they head out to their duty stations. Requested items include:

  • small packs/bottles of Tylenol/Motrin/generic brands of pain relievers
  • Blistex, chap stick (with sunscreen)
  • hand lotion
  • hand sanitizer
  • soap
  • deodorant
  • eye drops
  • nose spray
  • moist wipes
  • Q-tips
  • toothbrushes
  • toothpaste
  • floss
  • disposable razors (good quality)
  • shaving cream
  • emory boards
  • pens/pencils
  • cough drops
  • Candy/snacks (heat resistant as it's already 100 degrees there): Life-savers, Twizzlers, beef jerky, Slim Jims, granola bars, tuna kits, nuts, etc.

Anyone who has items to donate may bring them to the RFH Guidance Office any time before April 13.
