5 Things You Need to Know Today: April 29

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Sun in the Sky, a Breeze in the Trees: According to the National Weather Service, today is expected to be sunny with a high of 69. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and head outside and take some photos of the beautiful cherry blossoms blooming around Rumson and Fair Haven in honor of Arbor Day. 2. Kids and Trees: Fair Haven's Shade Tree Commission has found a kid-friendly way to celebrate Arbor Day. Arbor Day is celebrated Nationwide on the last Friday in April, and encourages the planting and care of trees. This year, The Fair Haven Shade Tree Commission (FSTC) will host a library story time where children will receive rooted saplings to take home and plant. 3. Pink Haven: Paint the Town Pink begins tomorrow on Saturday, April 30 and runs through Saturday, May 7, though towns, businesses, and residents have already started by decorating homes, buildings and even city streets with all things pink. Click to see some homes decorated for the festivities. There are also lots of pink activities happening around Fair Haven this weekend. Saturday, April 30 is Pink Retail Day in Pink Bank and Pink Haven from 10:00a.m.-5:00p.m. Visit participating Pink Partners in Pink Bank and Pink Haven and enjoy hundreds of Pink discounts at the many businesses in these towns. Also on Saturday is Play for Pink at the Fair Haven Fields. Head on over and show your support as local sports teams in Fair Haven Play for Pink from 9:00a.m.-2:00p.m. Sunday, May 1 is the Pink Haven Pancake Breakfast from 8:00a.m.-12:00p.m. at the Pink Haven Firehouse. This event is sponsored by Cub Scout Pack #127.

4. Operation Take Back: The Fair Haven Police Department (FHPD) will take part in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, a nationwide effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to help people dispose of their prescription drugs safely. FHPD will collect drugs at the Fair Haven Youth Center on 35 Fisk Street, directly behind the police department, from 10a.m. – 2p.m. on Saturday, April 30. 5. Girl Power: Allison Nixon, a Girl Scout and RFH freshman, has created a "Journey Project" about body image, eating disorders in young girls and learning to love your body as it is. This project is the step between the Girl Scout Silver and Gold Awards. Nixon did research and created large display full of information and photos that has been featured at the in Rumson since the beginning of April. The display has been a big hit at the library, so much so that Nixon had to replenish the flyers that were available with the display. Be sure to stop in to see the display before it is taken down this weekend.
