5 Things You Need to Know Today: April 15

A round-up of useful information and events happening around Rumson and Fair Haven today.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to know today:

1. Go PINK: Today is the last day to sign-up to "Pink Your Home" to help raise awareness of the importance of breast cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. Residents of Fair Haven are encouraged to transform their towns into Pink Haven for seven days this spring by “Pinking Their Homes” from April 30 through May 7. The contest is part of this year’s Paint the Town Pink initiative sponsored by Riverview Medical Center. Residents can either decorate their houses using the starter kit delivered to their house after they sign-up, or they can enter the house decorating contest and put their creativity to the test. In past years, residents have wowed the judges with some unique PINK decorations and survivor tributes. To sign up for the “Pink Your House” contest all residents have to do is fill out a form on the Paint the Town Pink Web site.

2. A Generous Gift: The DiPiero family of Rumson has donated $500,000 to Riverview Medical Center, a spokesman announced today. The gift will help build Riverview's new 22,000-square foot surgical center set to open in 2012, which will benefit local residents who will be able to receive advanced surgical procedures near home -- instead of going to New York City. This is one of several large donations the DiPiero family has given to Riverview Medical Center. Since 2005, Domenic DiPiero, the founder of Newport Capital Group, has served as a trustee of the medical center. He is now the new chairman of the Riverview Medical Center Foundation board. Click to read more about the DiPiero family and their generous donation.

The show highlighted the many different talents of the students and even faculty at the school. There was even a performance by two "banditos" in Spanish. First place went to the band EleFunk. 4. When Chickens Go Moo!: The second grade class at Fair Haven's Sickles school performed the adorable Wackadoo Zoo on April 14th to a packed house. The animals were all mixed up as the concert featured a zoo of animals who make the wrong sounds and the professors who try to fix them. The students were accompanied by music teacher Ruth Rapkin on piano and gave a great performance.
