Healthcare Costs & Divorce

Dear Divorce Information NOW,

I am getting divorced and am concerned about health care costs for myself and my children. What should I be thinking about? Please be very specific because I am not employed and one of my kids always seems to be at the doctor's office.

Thank you, Beth

In answer to your question consider these top ten issues for health care, behavioral health, dental care, as well as optical care.

  1. Although you are not employed at the moment you might be employed in the future in which case...whose insurance plan, yours or the children's father/mother, will provide coverage?

  2. Who pays the insurance premium?

  3. Who is responsible for the co-pay?

  4. For professional expenses, procedures and medicine... not covered by insurance: Who pays those charges?

  5. Duration of insurance responsibility?

  6. Who pays the co-pay for medicine?

  7. Who pays the co-pay for physical therapy?

  8. Who pays for mechanical devises?

  9. HOW ARE CHRONIC HEALTH CARE ISSUES PAID?

 10. Investigate your eligibility for health coverage under a COBRA plan.

 11. How are elective procedures/surgeries covered?

The requirements/entitlements to health care access vary according to the state in which you divorce. Having said that, health care coverage and costs for you and your children are negotiable, as are so many other parts of a divorce settlement. Our answer serves as a reminder of issues to consider that you might otherwise forget. As you speak to your spouse, financial adviser and/or lawyer keep these thoughts in mind to include in your settlement proposal.

Hope this helps,
