Coffee More Than A Pick-Me-Up At Booskerdoo

Beans are freshly roasted and ground at innovative new coffee shop in Monmouth Beach.

Heading north towards Sea Bright, one has to pass through Monmouth Beach. However, now there is a good reason to take a slight detour by making a left at Beach Road. This detour will lead you to some of the best coffee to be ground in-house.

Booskerdoo, located in the Village Square shopping center at 36 Beach Road in Monmouth Beach, boasts its very own Diedrich Coffee Roaster. According to www.oncoffeemakers.com although the “Diedrich Coffee Roaster is so much more expensive, it can also bring more ‘things’ into your coffee experience.”

Owned by Amelia and James Caverly, Booskerdoo Coffee Co. opened in late April 2011. Amelia works as a teacher, while James watches over the shop. “I worked in New York as a Barista,” explained James. “Because of the economy, I wanted to strike out on my own. Coffee is depression proof!”

Everything is done right here in the shop. The green beans are run through the coffee roaster turning them into roasted beans. These roasted beans are taken behind the counter and transformed into the grind that makes the flavorful cups of coffee being served here.

“The beans that I purchase are a specialty grade,” added James. “They are high on taste, with a low amount of defects.” Learning about this industry through his work experience and studying, James spent an extensive amount of time coming up with his own signature blends. These include the Little Big Coffee Decaf Blend, the Bottle Rocket, the Guatemala Fancy Antigua and the Jersey Diner, described by James as your “classic East Coast French Roast.” There is also one called the Black & Tan, which combines dark beans with light beans.

Attempting to satisfy my urge for one of the stronger blends, I tried the Bottle Rocket. With the rich flavor consuming me, nothing else seemed to matter for those few moments of coffee bliss.

The freshness of the Caverly’s name for the shop matches the freshness of the coffee they serve. James was adamant that no “old coffee” is served to anyone. He keeps his product in containers to protect it from the oxygen. In addition, he abides by the shelf-life of the coffee being one week.

James also informed me that all of his employees are knowledgeable about coffee. One of his employees, Zoe Trapp, left the Accounting field to work here. Moving to the states from London, Trapp explained “I’ve experienced very good coffee shops in London and New York and this place competes with the best of them.” Not bad for someone who thought coffee was disgusting the first time she tried it because it was of the instant variety.

“People come in here because they heard about our coffee,” concludes Trapp. “At the end of the day, coffee is all about pleasure.”

Besides coffee, their hot chocolate gets high ratings. It could be because of their secret ingredient. The Italian Soda recipes are courtesy of Amelia. Their espresso drinks possess a 1/3 coffee mix. Twelve-ounce bags of coffee, as well as Grinders and Drip Cones are available for purchase. There are a variety of teas available in tins, as well.

Bagels, cookies, brownies and scones are among the many items that can be ordered, so that you have something to wash down with your drink. Oatmeal and fresh fruit are available for all ages, with a special Kids’ Menu listed on their board.

Booskerdoo is open currently from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday, 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday. Visit www.booskerdoo.com for more information or just call the shop at 732-222-0729.

“The Jersey Shore has a great coffee culture,” stated James. “We are a welcoming neighborhood micro coffee roaster.” Words can only say so much! Visit Booskerdoo and taste coffee the way it was meant to be tasted.
