Boondocks Signals the Season

Boondocks Fishery in Red Bank opened its doors Wednesday night. The seasonal lobster shack has been open for four years now.

Summer doesn't officially start until June 20; but, for most shore towns, the start of the season is signaled by the opening of their boardwalks to tourism business, lifting metal gates to arcades and flipping the 'on' switch to the Gravitron as the crowds begin to pile in.

For the past few years, the unofficial start of the season down the road from Rumson and Fair Haven, in Red Bank, has been heralded by the opening of the .

Located alongside the Navesink River next to Marine Park, the seasonal lobster house opened its doors to business Wednesday night, welcoming a crowd of locals eager to see its return.

Owner Kelly Ryan said it was just four years ago that Boondocks first opened its doors, serving its signature lobster rolls in a decidedly beach-centric outdoor dining space. Through the years, Ryan said, not too much has changed. Many of her seasonal staff are the same.

The cook she hired four years ago is still here, as are plenty of the waitresses that signed up those years ago, coming on as college freshman looking to make some summer bucks and now coming on as graduating seniors looking to bridge the gap between school and whatever is next.

"It's been a lot of fun," she said.
