Theater Watch: Ray Manzarek, Lindsey Buckingham, and Ben Bailey

Check out what's happening at Count Basie this week.

As we head in to November, we’ve got another packed week at , with performances by Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of the Doors, Lindsey Buckingham, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman and Ben Bailey from the Discovery Channel’s Cash Cab.

Start off the week on Tuesday, Nov. 1 with two rock and roll legends—Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of the Doors. Manzarek was born in Chicago, but headed out west to attend UCLA film school. It was there, on Venice Beach in 1965, that he met Jim Morrison. Manzarek took an immediate liking to Morrison’s unique style of poetry, and deemed him the perfect addition to his musical ideas.

Out of this union, the infamous group The Doors was formed. Manzarek and Morrison were joined by guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore.  The group was signed to Elektra Records and went on to release six studio albums and a live album before Morrison’s death in 1971.

Manzarek and Krieger reunited in 2002 to bring their love of music back to life. They began a tour that year, and haven’t stopped since. Their set usually includes lots of classic Doors material which attracts both longtime fans and a new generation of followers.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, guitarist, singer, songwriter and record producer Lindsey Buckingham brings his talent to the stage. Best known for being the guitarist and male lead singer of Fleewood Mac, Buckingham wrote some of the group’s biggest hits, including Go Your Own Way, Big Love and Monday Morning.

Buckingham has released six solo albums since 1981, all of which have enjoyed success on the Top 40 charts. He also wrote and performed the popular songs Holiday Road and Dancin’ Across America from the film National Lampoon’s Vacation. The success of those songs led to appearances on more soundtracks, including Time Bomb Town from the film Back to the Future.

On Friday, Nov. 4, be sure to check out the musical stylings of Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman, two original members of the progressive rock group Yes.

Jon Anderson was the lead vocalist and creative force behind the popular group Yes. Anderson co-authored some of the group’s biggest hits, including I’ve Seen All Good People, Roundabout, and Owner of a Lonely Heart.

Rick Wakeman is a talented pianist and keyboardist who first joined Yes in 1971. He has produced multiple solo albums throughout his long career, with the most widely known being The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Get ready to laugh on Saturday, Nov. 5, when NJ native and host of the TV game show Cash Cab brings his comedic talent to the Count Basie stage.

A NJ native, Bailey spent time in Los Angeles where he tried his hand at standup comedy. Eventually, he moved back to New York and began doing open-mic nights to brush on his comedic skills. The perseverance paid off, and Bailey landed a job on the ultra-popular Discovery Channel show Cash Cab.

Bailey got his first break as a Star Search semi finalist in 2003. After that, the successes didn’t stop, and Bailey went on to have his own Comedy Central special. He has also appeared on Jay Leno, and has at multiple comedy festivals throughout the world. He has also made guest appearances on One Life to Live, Law and Order: SVU, Mad TV, Hope and Faith and The Knights of Prosperity.

Cash Cab airs on the Discovery Channel, and is a unique game show in which passengers in a special taxi are surprised and offered a chance to win money by correctly answering a series of general knowledge questions en route to their final destination. As the host of this popular show, Ben Bailey earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Game Show Host.
