Basie Earns Preservation Award

The Monmouth Street theater recognized for maintaining its distinct historic feel.

The was recently presented with a Historic Preservation Award from Monmouth County for its effort to maintain the Monmouth Street theater's historic style, county officials announced recently.

According to a release, the Basie has "elevated its historic stature" by securing listing on the National Register of Historic Places. In recent years the historic theatre has gone through significant interior and exterior renovations all the while maintaining the theater's historic look. The replacement of the exterior masonry and replication of the historic marquee (pictures above) made the Basie a two-time honoree.

"We speak regularly of Monmouth County as a historic county,” Freeholder Lillian Burry said in a release. "Monmouth County is historic not only for what happened here, but for the efforts of those who preserve its buildings to ensure that they will be here for future generations. Preserving these sentinels of the past takes more than interest in history; it takes personal dedication, hard work and financial commitment by these current guardians of our shared heritage."

Preservation awards are given out annually to recognize people who have preserved a piece of Monmouth County history, the release stated.
