Victory Park Basketball Courts Could Get a New Look

The Rumson Recreation Committee held a meeting May 18 and discussed possibility of resurfacing Victory Park Basketball Courts with new synthetic material.

The basketball courts at Victory Park are a great resource for residents, but the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School basketball coach says we need an upgrade.

At a Rumson Recreation meeting  at Borough Hall, committee members discussed the possibility of resurfacing Victory Park basketball courts with a new synthetic material.

Recreation Director, John Hird, opened the meeting with an address from Chris Champeu, RFH varsity basketball coach, who presented a proposal for the resurfacing of Victory Park basketball courts with a new, safer synthetic material that would replace the current asphalt blacktop.

"I'm not sure if you ever fell on asphalt, but its like playing on the streets," Champeu said. "The surface is rough." The new synthetic material, composed of a rubbery material, and would be laid down by a local business owner, Chamepu said.

"The cost to resurface the court is $7,000 while to surface the court would be $12,000," he said. "The synthetic is expected to last ten years with a guaranteed two-year warrantee that would cover it if anything happens."

The color of the court is yet to be determined and would need to be presented in front of the Borough but the sample presented to the Commission was purple, which brought up commission concerns over aesthetic appeal.

The proposal was given to the commission and will be further discussed within the Borough.
