Help Fight Hunger with the Barefoot Beach Bakers

Sophia Shea and Kristina Taylor are participating in the Great American Bake Sale this weekend.

A local lemonade stand has transformed into a way to help the hungry, thanks to two local children’s efforts.

Last Saturday, Sophia Shea, 11, of Highlands and Kristina Taylor, 12, of Rumson, put their entrepreneur instincts to work by selling lemonade to local passersby. Selling the lemonade at 25 cents a cup, the girls had a successful first day by bringing in $30. The girls decided to do it again the next day, and had even more success by bringing their grand total to $90. However, instead of taking that money to the closest mall, the girls decided to put the money they raised to benefit the hungry.

“We saw how much we made from our lemonade stand and realized that this could go to a good cause,” explained Shea.

Taylor explained that weeks ago, while watching the food network with her mother, a commercial for the Great American Bake Sale came on. After seeing how much money they made in a weekend, the girls had their “ah-ha” moment and decided to set up an account with the Great American Bake Sale.

“Our original goal was $300,” explained Taylor. “Then we passed that, so we raised it to $600. After we passed that goal, we raised again it to $1000 and we just made that goal.”

While signing up with the Great American Bake Sale, the girls named themselves the Barefoot Beach Bakers and are preparing to continue selling lemonade and other homemade treats this weekend during the Great American Bake Sale’s third annual National Challenge Weekend.

With help from their families, the girls will be selling different types of granola, brownies, blondies, seven layer bars, breadsticks, savory scones, cookies, and more, along with their classic lemonade this Saturday and Sunday on Ward Road in Rumson. If you are unable to attend the bake sale, the Barefoot Beach Bakers are still collecting donations online. If you would like to donate please click here.
