Super Bowl Sunday: Locals Share How They Celebrate this All-American Holiday

Local residents and business owners in Fair Haven and Rumson talk about their game time plans and traditions.

Steelers fans, get out the terrible towel. Packers fans, throw on that green and gold jersey. Football lovers everywhere, get ready to party.

This Sunday, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin are going head to head at Super Bowl XLV.

in Fair Haven has the Super Bowl Spirit. After the New Year, Tavolo’s put out a menu designed for the Super Bowl. The idea is that customers can order the food in advance, and pick it up on Super Bowl Sunday to take wherever they please.

“It’s easy and convenient,” said Patti Balderas, owner and pastry chef of Tavolo’s. “We make the food, you pick it up and bring it to your party, and it’s delicious!”

The Super Bowl menu at Tavolo’s has a wide spread of Super Bowl favorites with an Italian twist. Some of the items on the menu include: Short rib chili, corn and black bean salsa, grilled chicken wings, and sausage, peppers and onions.

When asked what she had planned for Super Bowl Sunday, Balderas said “I’m going to sit in front of a large television with my husband in peace and quiet and eat some of this good food.”

Down the road at , employee RJ Carr has a different way of enjoying good food and the game. “I go to a pot luck Super Bowl Party every year,” said Carr. “Everyone brings something different. People usually bring things like sliders, mini hotdogs, nachos, and I always bring the hot wings.”

Another football favorite is sub sandwiches. in Fair Haven offers some of the biggest around and they are ready to lay the meat on for this Super Bowl Sunday. If you mention this article, you can get a 3 foot sub for $35, instead of the regular $42 price.

If its alcohol you want to bring to a party, get creative. Since this year the Packers are playing the Steelers, why not bring some beer with black, yellow, green or gold labels? Or, you can get really fancy and find some Iron City Brewing Company beer in honor of the Steelers, which is made in Pittsburgh.

Peace and quiet and pot lock parties are two ways to celebrate the Super Bowl, but how about dressing up? Kyle Matteson of Fair Haven said he attends a Super Bowl party every year where people wear only the colors of the teams playing.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Matteson. “People really get into it and wear crazy clothes with the team colors. It doesn’t matter whether you like the team or not, we dress up in the team colors to celebrate the game itself.”

Lindsey Plancey, employee at , is a New Jersey resident rooting for a Pennsylvania team. When asked if she was excited about the Steelers going to the Super Bowl she said, with a huge smile on her face, "Oh yeah. I am a born-and-raised, die-hard Steelers fan."
