Road Work to Delay Traffic on Route 520

Milling and paving work to slow traffic to 25 mph with two lanes open.

If you're planning on traveling down Newman Springs Road, or Route 520, expect delays or plan an alternate route on Wednesday and Friday.

As the bridge deck replacement work over the Swimming River, at the border of Red Bank, moves toward completion, the roadway will be milled and paved on both days, with work beginning at 7 a.m., a release from Monmouth County officials said.

The posted speed limit on the county road will be reduced to 25 mph during this phase of the project. The speed reduction coupled with a normally four-lane span of roadway being reduced to a single lane in either direction are factors that are expected to slow traffic flow significantly, the release added.

“When this work is completed, the roadway will be reopened to four lanes of traffic,” Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone said in the release. “The remaining work is on schedule to be completed in December …"

The small bridge had deteriorated significantly over the past 40 years. To keep it in compliance with current safety standards and extend its life by another 30 to 40 years, the entire deck needed to be replaced, Arnone said.

The Monmouth County Department of Public Works and Engineering is overseeing the project.
