Pomphrey Pond: A Resource For Residents to Enjoy For Years to Come

The Mayor and Council held a dedication ceremony naming the pond across from Borough Hall after a family that lived by and cared for the pond since 1906.

Many Rumson residents know the pond across from as a place to go to relax, feed the ducks, go fishing, catch frogs and pollywogs in the summer, and ice skate in the winter.

Now, this treasured Rumson resource is officially known as Pomphrey Pond. The Mayor and Council held a dedication ceremony for the Borough Pond on Saturday, June 11. 

The pond was called Pomphrey Pond by locals for years prior to the dedication. The name came from the family that had lived in the house to the north of the pond since 1906 and often took care of area.

Several members of the Pomphrey family spoke at the dedication event along with Mayor John Ekdahl and Cindy Randazzo, a representative from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

“It was a nice ceremony and we had a rather large crowd come out to see the dedication,” said Mayor Ekdahl reflecting on the event at the council meeting on June 14.

This dedication came after the spent many hours cleaning up the area, dredging and making some improvements to the pond last year.

"Pomphrey Pond, a site that had given pleasure to so many -- both young and old-- will be enjoyed by Rumson residents for many years in the future," said Councilman Shaun Broderick in his committee report.
