Local pub celebrates Halloween with 29th annual costume party and contest.

It may have been a work night, but that didn’t stop the die-hard Halloween crew from attending the 29th annual Halloween Costume Contest and Party Oct. 31 at in Rumson.

It was standing-room only at the party complete with pirates, prisoners, princesses and other costumes including an enormous wolf man who howled – indoors and out – most of the evening.

“This is our 29th party, and they have all been fun! We have prizes for the employees, and cash prizes for the patrons,” said Todd Sherman, owner of Barnacle’s.

There were dozens of diners not in costume, but they were outnumbered by the attendees – even waiters and waitresses – in their Halloween best.

The duo of Pat Guadagno and Richard Blackwell – along with the games on TV – kept the crowd entertained the entire evening.

The party’s climax was the much-anticipated costume contest, with winners announced around 11 p.m. First place went to the enormous costume – complete with blinking red eyes – of Jabba the Hut portrayed by Duane Leist of Highlands and accompanied by his “prisoner,” Princess Leia, Melissa Leist.

Second place went to a playful cannoli costume – with cannoli “filling” oozing out her head and calves, and her face with “chocolate chips” – created by Jessica Brown of Belford. It may have been difficult to maneuver in, but it was prize-worthy. Taking third place, for the second consecutive year, was Melissa Johnson of Matawan, as “Winter” – in light of the dusting over the weekend – or, perhaps a modified Lady Gaga minus the egg or recent androgynous outfit.

Cash prizes were awarded to the trio, and the annual party continued on into the Halloween night.
