Newsworthy: What's the Story in R-FH?

A look at the week ahead in Rumson and Fair Haven news

Well, when it rains, sometimes it really does pour in the - area — both literally and figuratively.

Good afternoon, Rumson and Fair Haven folks! It is, indeed, raining and pouring sporadically on our peninsula of two boroughs today. It’s not a good spring day to be out on the river or at the beach, but it’s a good day to lounge and read Patch. And we have some good stories coming to the site this week.

• On the subject of pouring, when there’s crime in Fair Haven, it hits with a surprise downpour — like .

We plan to follow up on the jolting crime that police say happened at on River Road Saturday morning.

Sgt. Robert Townsend got us some information as soon as possible and Detective Sgt. Jesse Dykstra is following up with an investigation. For now, all we know is that a white male in his 40s or 50s allegedly robbed the store at gunpoint, left with a bag full of jewelry and headed toward Rumson in a white compact car with out-of-state license plates.

Something like that is a very rare occurrence in this area. The Fair Haven PD is on the case, though, so the suspect will, no doubt, be caught. We’ll let you know more as soon as police tell us what they can.

• Tomorrow is primary election day. While there are no contested primaries within parties in Rumson or Fair Haven, it’s still your right to cast that vote. For a look at sample ballots, click here

• The Planning Board will be meeting tonight in Rumson at 7:30 p.m. No agenda is posted on the Rumson Web site, so we do not know if there are any applications of interest on it. Word about town is that there’s nothing much going on. But, as always, if you want to stay informed on development in the area, popping in to the meeting is a good idea.

• We have a couple of interesting businesses coming to both towns, so keep a look-out for those profiles — one will be featured today. It involves children with allergies and epi pens — very hot topic and interesting business. The other involves staying in shape for those summer months.

• There’s an ongoing issue in Fair Haven concerning who is responsible for the upkeep of supposedly “private” roads. Council has adopted a no maintenance policy for those roads (there are about nine), unless resident can prove they are borough-owned. There are a lot of conflicting opinions on ownership and who’s responsible for what. We’ve got it covered. Stay tuned.

• Just for fun, we’re going to feature some “post your old pics” items. This week, we’ll be starting that with a call out for people to post their old prom pics. I’ll be the first, so I expect others to follow suit. Don’t leave my kooky prom pic from 1912 or so out there as a target for bullying at my age. Post yours, too. And I know there are an awful lot of R-FH grads out there. Recent grads are welcome to post their pics, too. Go ahead, make us old folks look really silly.

Well, that’s the news for now, friends and fans. Stay tuned and let us know if you hear about something we may have missed. Until then, happy Monday … or something like that. ;)
