New Plans and Old Memories for July 4

Rumson-Fair Haven locals share their favorite Fourth of July traditions and what they're looking forward to this year.

Whether it’s the company of family or the celebration itself, the Fourth of July means something different to everybody. As another holiday weekend is upon us, locals look forward to old traditions and remember how they started.

“Every year, I help my dad grill steaks,” said Sean Mattis, a senior at  (RFH). “Then I watch the fireworks in Sea Bright and hang out on the beach.”

Beach fireworks are a popular Independence Day tradition. “It’s always packed,” said Cosmo Sparshatt, also a senior at RFH. “There are kids our age from RFH, and we get to see all the people we know.”

Denise Pauline, from Pauline’s Paperie, also heads out to Sea Bright each year for the fireworks. “It’s not like going to Red Bank,” said Pauline. “You see them right over your head.”

Pauline, who has been going to Sea Bright for almost 15 years, spends the holiday with her friends at Sea Bright Beach Club. “It’s fun to go with friends, hang out, and put your toes in the sand,” said Pauline. “That’s why it’s more fun than Red Bank.”

For some, Victory Park is the place to be on July 3rd.

“Last year was our first time seeing the Rumson fireworks,” said Joseph DeOliveira, who recently moved from Westfield. “It was beautiful.”

DeOliveira, who lives near Victory Park, said his location was excellent for the view. “Our friends and family came here because we live here,” said DeOliveira. “They all came early, we had something to eat, and then watched them from right here in the park.”

Visitors to Victory Park score prime seating and the best view in the house while sharing in a positive atmosphere.

“People brought blankets and food, and the setting was a totally different experience,” said Marco Messercola of Rumson. “There were people as far as the eye can see. It was a good family environment with people selling ice cream on bikes. And if kids get bored, they can play on the playground.”

Both Messercola and DeOliveira plan to watch the Rumson fireworks from Victoary Park again this year.
