Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrances

The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be remembered in the Red Bank area in two different ways on Monday.

• On Monday morning, giving back to the community is the focus of this year’s Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast hosted by The Community YMCA; and, the event will benefit Lunch Break food bank, Red Bank.

On Monday, Jan. 21, from 8 to 10 a.m., at Branches, 123 Monmouth Road in West Long Branch, the Y will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Event organizers encourage attendees to bring non-perishable food items that will be donated to Lunch Break. 

Hosted by The Community YMCA and the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, the annual event celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. King. More than 200 area residents, students, community leaders and friends of the Y are expected to attend.

Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Richard E. Incremona will be presenting the Prosecutor’s Humanitarian Award to a local student and the winners of the YMCA Dr. King essay contest will be announced. 

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Brian K. Roper, a local physician and pharmacist who is committed to health and wellness and academic excellence. He has been a speaker at forums focusing on these topics as well as black history for more than 20 years. 

• And in the afternoon ...

The Red Bank Charter School will host a small march at 2 p.m. in honor of Dr. King. School officials ask anyone who wishes to join in to meet at the school on Oakland street 2 p.m. when the group will march to Shrewsbury Avenue and then West Front Street to Broad, down Monmouth and back to the school.
