Haskell to Feature Some of Racing's Best

There will be several Haskell-themed events at Monmouth Park this weekend.

The Haskell at Oceanport's Monmouth Park is a weekend-long celebration and features some of the sport's best horses.

The Haskell will highlight a 14-race card on Sunday, July 28, which will include five graded stakes events. Gates will open at 10 a.m. with first post set for noon. The Haskell is slated as the 13th race with an estimated post time of 6:20 p.m., according to the Monmouth Park web site.

Long Branch Stakes winner Micromanage, Preakness (G1) winner Oxbow, Wood Memorial (G1) winner Verrazano, Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Golden Soul and Grade 1 winner Power Broker and others will participate in Sunday's race.

Verrazano drew the outside Post 7 and was installed the slight 9-5 favorite by Monmouth Park oddsmaker Brad Thomas. Oxbow, winner of the Preakness Stakes and second in the Belmont Stakes, goes from Post 5 and is the 2-1 second choice.

The Haskell weekend will kick off tonight with the Joes vs. Jocks Mini Golf Festival at Monmouth Park. Thirty six foursomes will play mini golf with Monmouth Park jockeys and personalities at the track's Bluegrass Mini Golf Course, which opened last year.

There will also be Dawn Patrol on Saturday at 8 a.m. at the track. The event gives guests a chance to tour Monmouth Park and learn more about it.

From noon to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, the Monmouth Park's picnic area will host Family Fun Day. The event features family-friendly events including pony rides, face painters, clowns and bounce houses. Tim McLoone and the Shirleys will also perform.
